The innovative journey of the Velocity Series, a trailblazing digital art project by Oracle Red Bull Racing (ORBR) and crypto exchange Bybit, in partnership with AOI, has been nothing short of spectacular. Now in its third phase, this web3 project is a delightful blend of speed, technology, and artistry, showcasing the talents of globally recognized digital artists like Rik Oostenbroek, Per Kristian Stoveland, and Art Blocks founder Erick Calderon, also known as “Snowfro.”
Drawing inspiration from race team analytics and the RB19 F1 car’s telemetry, the digital artworks in the series brilliantly capture the essence of speed and motion. Each stage of the series beautifully aligns with the 2023 Formula 1 races across the globe, including the Netherlands, Japan, the United States, and Abu Dhabi, offering an immersive and dynamic experience to fans worldwide.
We had the unique opportunity to delve into the concept, curation, and creation of the Velocity Series with insights from ORBR, Bybit, AOI, and Calderon.
Concept: A Fusion of Art and Racing
ORBR shared their vision with us, emphasising how the Velocity Series is a dynamic fusion of art and racing, connecting two worlds that at first glance seem distinct. The series aims to offer motorsport enthusiasts a vibrant introduction to generative art while providing ORBR fans a tangible connection to their favourite team through unique, team-inspired designs. Additionally, the project serves as a fan engagement initiative, inviting web3 enthusiasts to explore the exhilarating world of racing, hopefully turning them into lifelong ORBR supporters.
“This collaboration is a testament to Oracle Red Bull Racing and Bybit’s dedication to innovation, blending the thrills of motorsport with the ever-evolving digital space,” ORBR enthused.
Curation: Art Meets Technology
The curation by AOI, a foundation at the forefront of emerging art and technology, found a perfect match in the Velocity Series. They described the curation process as a meticulous journey, creating a space where artists could interact creatively with the data-driven world of Oracle Red Bull Racing. This collaboration not only celebrated artistic excellence but also brought together the creative and commercial objectives seamlessly.
AOI’s selection criteria focused on artists who not only demonstrate artistic brilliance but also have a flair for integrating their vision with big brand ethos. The foundation looked for artists who are bold in their exploration of new concepts and unafraid to push boundaries.
Creation: Calderon’s Vision
Calderon, in the third stage of the Velocity Series, drew inspiration from his love for driving and speed. He shared, “My experience in racing, primarily as a hobbyist, influenced the use of italicized fonts and the forward slash in the /// project to symbolize motion and speed.” The /// project, embodying Calderon’s minimalist style, also introduced a tactile dimension through embroidery, exploring the balance between digital and physical art forms.
Calderon sees digital objects as a gateway to creating physical art, testing these concepts in real-time as owners of the digital pieces use their designs in creative ways, like customizing backpacks or shirts.
